The concept of this development is to break any from current trends of mass-housing based on “cookie-cutter” type shoe-box design. The 25 unit development was conceived as Heritage Styled homes which aims to re-capture the old ways of living in the outdoors with nature, encouraging neighborliness and a sense of community which is currently lost in most developments.

The 25 unit development was conceived as Heritage Styled homes which aims to re-capture the old ways of living in the outdoors with nature, encouraging neighborliness and a sense of community which is currently lost in most developments.

The conceived architectural concept consists of the British Colonial style as well as the Peranakan (baba-nyonya culture) style. The elements of these styles are infused into the plans of each dwelling type. Almost all the units are different in design and plans to cater to the individual requirement and create a development where every unit is distinctly different from its neighbor. There are all together 11 different types of designs to choose out of the 12 pairs of Semi-D and 1 individually designed bungalow.

The site has Category 3 & 4 slopes which requires extensive slope stabilisation methods to prevent erosion or possible future slope failure. The engineering techniques used to overcome this was by introducing soil nailing, reinforced slopes, retaining walls and extensive earthworks to reduce the steepness of the site.

Spice gardens are created to encourage the community to jointly manage the plants/spices and enjoy the harvest for ingredients in local delicacies. This also creates a culture of cooperation and friendliness.

Also, a coordinated and rich landscape is provided for the development. Jogging paths and walkways around the development help create a sense of neighborliness that are shared by only a privileged few. Taking advantage of the steep slope of the site, elevated walkways lead to a lookout deck, to appreciate a panoramic view of the development and the city.

Passive Strategies
Passive Strategies

All the different typologies in the development adhere to several design strategies inspired by heritage architecture, namely colonial and peranakan style houses. Traditionally, these houses were climate-responsive and relied on passive strategies to maximise ventilation and reduce solar heat gain.

These strategies work in tandem as a passive system to improve the thermal efficiency of the houses as well as enhance thermal comfort for the inhabitants to lessen the reliance on mechanical ventilation.

The passive strategies utilized in the building are:-

1.Water features that encourage evaporative cooling.

2.Trellises on the façade act as a second skin that reduces solar gain.

3. Tall ceilings inspired by heritage architecture   improves heat dissipation.

4.Skylight windows fill the stairwell with sunlight, improving stack ventilation.

5.Gable vents improve ventilation as it allows hot air to escape through the upper levels of the house.
